Description
Beneath the surface lies the story of who we are.
Roots uses the imagery of intertwining tree roots to explore a deeper idea: where we come from shapes who we are. The show draws parallels between the strength, resilience, and growth of roots in nature and the formative connections, experiences, and histories that ground us. An all-original score combines organic timbres and earthy sound effects to bring this concept to life.

Movement 1 – Origins
A grounded, resonant opening channels a tribal energy—strong rhythms, open voicings, and earthy timbres evoke something ancient, as if tapping into the very beginning of it all. Earthy sound effects signify our roots plunging deep into the earth. Performers start on the ground, connected to where we came from. -
Movement 2 – Tension and Growth
Like plants, we are hardened and strengthened by adversity. The deepest dug roots can withstand even the most torrential storms and brutal weather. Musically, a feature for the front ensemble takes center stage. For the battery, the movement is highly visual, portraying the hardship and adversity that define the show’s central conflict. A snare feature at the end heightens the intensity and propels the narrative toward resolution. -
Movement 3 – Flourish
Recovering from the storm, our hardened roots can now flourish. Exciting, groove-oriented writing drives the final push, symbolizing growth and untapped potential. Expansive harmonies and infectious rhythmic layering propel the ensemble toward a confident, resonant conclusion.
